</div>
As promised in the <a href="http://www.quiltedcupcake.net/2014/01/valentines-day-craft-ideas-be-mine.html" target="_blank">earlier post,</a> I've created a new DIY craft tutorial for an easy Valentine's Day heart banner. This simple garland is easy to make and adds instant vintage charm to your home. The flag style pennant is a great Valentine's Day craft, but you could really use it year round. I love the combination of vintage sheet music found at a thrift store with modern printed scrapbook paper. See full instructions below - please feel free to share with friends or on <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/quiltedcupcake/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a>.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Vintage book paper or sheet music (find them at thrift stores!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sewing machine</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Red Paper hearts</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
String, Yarn or Twine</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Stapler</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Crochet Hook (optional)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pattern Below</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Directions</b>:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Step One:</b></div>
<div>
Save the template image jpeg below to your computer (right click and save as a jpeg). You can also download it here at my <a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/197851659/Heart-Garland-Template-QuiltedCupcake" target="_blank">Scribd </a>page.</div>

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fEfiJTA7-_g/Us7638UAMjI/AAAAAAAAgj4/nStCruIfB7Q/s1600/Garland+Banner+Template+QuiltedCupcake.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fEfiJTA7-_g/Us7638UAMjI/AAAAAAAAgj4/nStCruIfB7Q/s1600/Garland+Banner+Template+QuiltedCupcake.jpg" height="320" width="243" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step Two:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Paste the template jpeg into Word, Paint, whichever program you use. If you'd like your banner to be the same size as mine, increase the size until it fits the dimensions listed. You can make the flags any size you like - just adjust the size of the heart. Print out the template onto cardstock, and cut it out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step Three:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Trace the template onto the vintage paper, and cut it out. I used 12 flags for my banner. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step Four:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Cut the same number of hearts from your choice of paper - I used red, you can vary it however you like :) You can either freehand cut the hearts, or use a Cricut or punch cut them out. My new <a href="http://www.cricut.com/" target="_blank">Cricut Expression 2</a> made quick work of these hearts.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Adhere the hearts to the bottom of the flags (see photos for placement - remember you'll be folding over the top, so you want the hearts closer to the bottom). I used a small bit of glue stick in the middle of each heart.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step Five:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Using black thread, sew around the outline of each heart twice. I promise it won't hurt your sewing machine - that's my expensive <a href="http://www.quiltedcupcake.net/2011/11/janome-in-house.html" target="_blank">Janome </a>I'm using there - no problems.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For some reason, sewing twice delivers a better look than just once.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3cVJpE9UqXc/Us7jM_ehvfI/AAAAAAAAgic/d_SWbTxdgkY/s1600/2014+007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3cVJpE9UqXc/Us7jM_ehvfI/AAAAAAAAgic/d_SWbTxdgkY/s1600/2014+007.JPG" height="287" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step Six:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Following the template, fold over the top of each flag along the dotted line. You're folding about 1 inch of the paper to the back to create a pocket for the string. Overachievers could sew the pocket across, but I chose to go fast and easy, and closed each with a few staples.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step Seven:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
String along baker's twine, cotton string or yarn of your choice. To make this a bit easier, I insert a crochet hook into the side of the pocket, and pull the yarn through each. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XfZ88F_vsjo/Us7t2aGX5JI/AAAAAAAAgjc/lfKAylFNYWU/s1600/2014+036.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XfZ88F_vsjo/Us7t2aGX5JI/AAAAAAAAgjc/lfKAylFNYWU/s1600/2014+036.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I hope you enjoy this tutorial - please share any projects you make with me. I'd love to showcase them on my <a href="https://www.facebook.com/QuiltedCupcake" target="_blank">Facebook </a>and <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/quiltedcupcake/" target="_blank">Pinterest </a>pages.</div>

Only $40 at <a href="http://www.amazon.com/" target="_blank">Amazon</a>, and worth every penny. My friend had introduced me to the wonder of crepes last year, but I was on the fence for buying one. So, I put it on my wish list. Lots of my gifts this year seemed to be things I want but wouldn't buy for myself - that strategy worked pretty well.<br />
<br />
Anyhow, the whole family is loving this new appliance. Just take a look at the results - yep, I made that lovely crepe in my very own kitchen! See below for the recipe - I've made 3 batches since Christmas Day.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-l2k5bdm9aJU/UsxE1tMHOlI/AAAAAAAAge0/qMSKQ3o0-YA/s1600/Crepe+maker.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-l2k5bdm9aJU/UsxE1tMHOlI/AAAAAAAAge0/qMSKQ3o0-YA/s1600/Crepe+maker.JPG" height="248" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's what the crepe maker looks like. And it comes with that cool little wooden rake. Yes, you can make crepes without the electric maker; however, the ability to have even heating makes a big difference in the results. It's easy to clean up, too. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-czBmTy92gnk/UsxFDF8lSXI/AAAAAAAAge8/EnoN6A-Xsig/s1600/CucinaPro-Griddle---12-Crepe-Maker.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-czBmTy92gnk/UsxFDF8lSXI/AAAAAAAAge8/EnoN6A-Xsig/s1600/CucinaPro-Griddle---12-Crepe-Maker.jpg" height="200" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">Here are my five tips for making perfect crepes at home: </span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol>
<li>Make up the batter (see recipe below) and let it sit for 30 minutes prior to starting your crepe making.</li>
<li>Melt butter and spread it on the griddle surface between each crepe.</li>
<li>Separate the crepes with sheets of wax paper or paper towels as you cook.</li>
<li>Make up more crepes than you think you need - they store well in the fridge for a few days, and you can heat them easily in the microwave.</li>
<li>My favorite toppings include: <a href="http://www.nutellausa.com/" target="_blank">Nutella </a>alone or with Bananas and/or Strawberries, Blueberries and whipped cream. Or, fold them in half and sprinkle with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar. </li>
</ol>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Crepe Recipe:</span></b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's the recipe that I use (thanks Parissa!). This makes about a dozen or so crepes.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Crepe batter Ingredients:</b></div>
<div>
3.5 cups of flour</div>
<div>
4 TBSP of sugar</div>
<div>
4 cups of milk (whole works best, but skim's OK too)</div>
<div>
4 TBSP melted butter </div>
<div>
6 eggs</div>
<div>
Pinch of Salt</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Also, melt 2 - 4 tablespoons of butter to spread on the griddle surface</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Directions:</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Measure all ingredients and combine in large bowl. The batter shouldn't have lumps. I use one of those <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-CSB-76BC-SmartStick-200-Watt-Immersion/dp/B000EGA6QI" target="_blank">wand mixers </a>or immersion hand mixers right in the bowl. </div>
<div>
You could probably use a blender, food processor or stand mixer. Whatever you need to get the batter to the consistency of heavy cream.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Let mix stand on counter for 30 minutes - I don't know why, but it works.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I like to pour the batter from a large mixing cup onto the surface of the griddle.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
They don't take long to cook- maybe a minute each? Flip them with a silicone turner when the top starts to look dry.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That's it - top (or not) and enjoy. Please leave me a comment below if you have a favorite crepe tip or topping.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I also like to add in sheet music and book paper to give Valentine's Day a vintage look. I'm working on several Valentine's Day garlands for home decor. Here's the first one:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-z0HfKI_E45k/UsbgWJAZpWI/AAAAAAAAgdY/EP0YEmoKguM/s1600/Be+Mine+Valentine.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-z0HfKI_E45k/UsbgWJAZpWI/AAAAAAAAgdY/EP0YEmoKguM/s640/Be+Mine+Valentine.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lKqhU01icqI/UsbgX-9zl9I/AAAAAAAAgdg/Ei2uzGzaxEE/s1600/QuiltedCupcake+Garland.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="247" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lKqhU01icqI/UsbgX-9zl9I/AAAAAAAAgdg/Ei2uzGzaxEE/s320/QuiltedCupcake+Garland.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I'm working on several others. I'm writing a tutorial for the heart banner below - so please check back soon!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mshAK65Ah5w/UsbgYTyrzdI/AAAAAAAAgds/oPJ-KhgbvGA/s1600/QuiltedCupcakebanner.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="171" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mshAK65Ah5w/UsbgYTyrzdI/AAAAAAAAgds/oPJ-KhgbvGA/s320/QuiltedCupcakebanner.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I also started a new <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/quiltedcupcake/" target="_blank">Pinterest </a>board for all things Hearts and Valentine's Day. You can find it <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/quiltedcupcake/hearts-and-valentines-day/" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

All using my <a href="http://www.cricut.com/" target="_blank">Cricut </a>to cut the shapes. My buddy Kathy turned me on to a great tutorial on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtatHccO1_s" target="_blank">YouTube</a> by Custom Crops that got me started with this one:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-z1Rx8fpfrCc/Ur2zMGN3KDI/AAAAAAAAgas/-iRdWEF7aoc/s1600/2013+009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="306" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-z1Rx8fpfrCc/Ur2zMGN3KDI/AAAAAAAAgas/-iRdWEF7aoc/s320/2013+009.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I gave this one to my sweet MIL as an early Christmas gift. Notice the Margie-style junk bow.<br />
<br />
Then, my sister <a href="http://lucysdaughter.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Kelly </a>made <a href="http://lucysdaughter.blogspot.com/2013/12/square-holly-wreath.html" target="_blank">this </a>one, and inspried me to do a square version for me - featuring both a junk bow and jingle bells.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tDLTpnVoDQM/Ur2zQKNExKI/AAAAAAAAga0/8mSS_cG14hA/s1600/square+wreath.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tDLTpnVoDQM/Ur2zQKNExKI/AAAAAAAAga0/8mSS_cG14hA/s320/square+wreath.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The last wreath I made (just finished last night) uses Rosettes along with some adorable <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/166870844/digital-clipart-instant-download-vintage?ref=shop_home_active&ga_search_query=snowman" target="_blank">vintage snowman images </a>I found from a fellow <a href="http://www.quiltedcupcake.com/" target="_blank">Etsy </a>seller, the Digital Chick. It's got a little bit of everything - junk bows, sheet music, silver foliage, vintage snowflakes and buttons. </div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Remember when you used to make paper snowflakes as a kid? Paper, scissors and a bunch of random cuts. Just like the real thing, no 2 were alike. That's what inspired my new Fabulously Festive snowflake garland. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This snowflake garland is made using cupcake liners and coffee filters as the base. They're already round, so it's easy to make perfect snowflakes and a <a href="http://joann.com/celebrate-the-season" target="_blank">Faulously Festive </a>holiday! And, the cupcake liners come in a rainbow of colors, so you can make pink, red or polka dot snowflakes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love how it looks on my Christmas cabinet. It would also work well on a tree or over a window.</div>

<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Directions:</b></div>
<div>
<ol>
<li>Flatten out the cupcake liner or coffee filter, then fold it into a pie shape<br /></li>
<li>Use your sharp scissors to cut out shapes along both folded sides. <br /></li>
<li>The most important step - iron your paper snowflakes! It really helps to keep them flat, particularly the coffee filter ones. They have a really cool texture after ironing. Just use a low setting on your iron. You can place a piece of fabric on top, but I didn't, and it worked just fine. <br /><br />Note: don't iron the foil snowflakes - just flatten them with your hands.<br /></li>
<li>Spray the coffee filter snowflakes with the Perfect Pearls mist, and let them dry. I layed out a few sheets of wrapping paper to keep the mess to a minimum. After they're dry, you may need to re-iron the pearly snowflakes.<br /></li>
<li>Take the pile of snowflakes to your sewing machine and sew them together. Just go right through the paper - I promise it won't hurt anything. I sewed more through the middle of each than the top to give them a bit of stability. You can sew a few stitches between each to space them properly.<br /><br />If you don't want to use a sewing machine, you could use yarn on a big needle and thread them through the holes.</li>
</ol>
<div>
Hang and enjoy!</div>

After a brief delay when I had to run out for more Twinkle lights, the ornaments are now on. I love remembering the story behind each one! Here are a few favorites:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CTboYbqFum4/Up4l3RQ837I/AAAAAAAAfss/hTJtRVlgrwg/s1600/Final+Ornament+Collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CTboYbqFum4/Up4l3RQ837I/AAAAAAAAfss/hTJtRVlgrwg/s400/Final+Ornament+Collage.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<ol>
<li>This is the oldest ornament on our tree. I received it as a gift from my Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Larson, in 1971. It's survived 4 moves plus 41 years of packing and unpacking. That's special!<br /></li>
<li>My sister Jan made this ornament using lace and trims from my wedding gown (which she also helped me to make) in 1989.<br /></li>
<li>First Ravens Super Bowl win in 2000 - a new one will be added this year!<br /></li>
<li>Statue of Liberty - we get ornaments from all the places we travel.<br /></li>
<li>This is a Santa rocket ornament for my hubby. You push a button and it says "Merry Christmas Houston" - kids love that one!<br /></li>
<li>A Hallmark ornament from our first Christmas tree together.<br /></li>
<li>A patriotic soldier from Colonial Williamsburg<br /></li>
<li>New ornament from this year's Spark Your Holidays - with a big junk bow!</li>

I love Baker's Twine. I have a cone of red and white that I use in packaging for my Etsy shop. It's hard to find baker's twine in a vareity of colors or at a good price.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On a recent trip to <a href="http://www.joann.com/" target="_blank">Joann</a>, I was thrilled to find Aunt Lydia's crochet thread has a new line of <a href="http://www.redheart.com/crochet-thread/aunt-lydias-bakers-cotton" target="_blank">Baker's Cotton</a> in great colors. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6cb1i6QLf2E/Up0LrmnHpiI/AAAAAAAAfsQ/kAcgjL4okM4/s1600/152_700.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6cb1i6QLf2E/Up0LrmnHpiI/AAAAAAAAfsQ/kAcgjL4okM4/s1600/152_700.png" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course, I bought the pink and white, and also the teal and white. They also have lime, purple, black and red mixed with white. Love it all!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Brown paper packages tied up with string are one of my favorite things.. On that note, is anyone else excited to see the live <a href="http://www.nbc.com/sound-of-music/" target="_blank">Sound of Music</a> this week? I can't wait....one of my favorite shows ever. I plan to sing along, so I'm sure nobody here will want to watch with me. Too bad - I can't help myself.</div>

Thanksgiving is a holiday I don't normally do a lot of crafting for - cooking the meal is enough work. However, this year, I decided to plan in advance for what my table would look like when I place that amazing dinner on it. I created this Turkey Tablescape using mostly items I had, with a few crafty additions using burlap, jute and <a href="http://www.quiltedcupcake.net/2013/10/5-tips-for-making-paper-rosettes.html" target="_blank">paper rosettes</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LvVxVCcG_BY/UnwMvaj5vgI/AAAAAAAAfo0/rtcynyTcQZE/s1600/Tablescape+Final.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LvVxVCcG_BY/UnwMvaj5vgI/AAAAAAAAfo0/rtcynyTcQZE/s400/Tablescape+Final.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
There are two main parts of the tablescape: the Burlap pockets for each placesetting, and the Paper Rosette bouquet using the <a href="http://www.joann.com/provo-craft-cricut-expression-2-die-cutting-machine/11180452.html#q=cricut&start=1" target="_blank">Cricut</a>. Today's post will focus on the burlap pocket tutorial, and we'll cover the paper rosette bouquet early next week. <br />
<br />
I can't be the only mom who's bought several sets of silverware over the years and finds herself with a random assortment, right? That's why I really like the burlap pockets -- they hold the napkin while also hiding the mismatched silverware I have. Tie a little jute bow around the random knife, fork and spoons you have, and they'll look so cute nobody will notice that they don't match. Plus, each person will have all the utensils they need for the whole meal. No searching through drawers looking for a spoon for dessert.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SOo48l0aVyU/UnwM3w69LyI/AAAAAAAAfpI/6QAHmvYhs6A/s1600/Placesetting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SOo48l0aVyU/UnwM3w69LyI/AAAAAAAAfpI/6QAHmvYhs6A/s320/Placesetting.jpg" width="239" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MmgT5ac7vwI/UnwM5tzjwbI/AAAAAAAAfpQ/sh-1g_sCyc0/s1600/all+components.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="231" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MmgT5ac7vwI/UnwM5tzjwbI/AAAAAAAAfpQ/sh-1g_sCyc0/s320/all+components.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Plus, you can re-use the burlap pockets for other ocaasions. Just change the deoration on top, or use them without an added embellishment.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ocd8gvBMcEY/UnwOPoJ8UoI/AAAAAAAAfpY/8mR_aKns4Y4/s1600/Spring+pocket.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ocd8gvBMcEY/UnwOPoJ8UoI/AAAAAAAAfpY/8mR_aKns4Y4/s320/Spring+pocket.jpg" width="284" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><b>Here's how to make the burlap pockets:</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Start with a roll of <a href="http://www.joann.com/panacea-products-burlap-roll-10-yd/10788610.html#prefn1=isProject&start=1&q=burlap+ribbon&sz=18&prefv1=false" target="_blank">burlap ribbon</a> with finished edges - this is easier than using burlap by the yard, as it saves a step. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol>
<li>Cut a 17" length of the burlap ribbon. </li>
<li>Fold down one edge by about 1 inch.</li>
<li>Using a zig zag stitch on your sewing machine, sew across the edge.</li>
<li>Fold up the pocket so the finished, clean edge you just made is about 5" from the bottom.</li>
<li>Sew a zig zag seam on each side of the pocket to secure edges.</li>
<li>Fold down the top edge by about 1 inch, and hem as above.</li>
<li>Trim any excess burlap under the top and bottom edges to neaten them up.</li>
<li>Add the silverware and napkin, and place in center of plate.</li>
<li>Place a paper rosette on the top of each pocket. No need to glue it down - your guests may even want to take it home. </li>
</ol>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

If you follow me on <a href="http://instagram.com/quiltedcupcake" target="_blank">Instagram </a>or <a href="https://www.facebook.com/QuiltedCupcake" target="_blank">Facebook</a>, you probably know that I'm a bit obsessed with making paper rosettes, also called lollies or pinwheels. I've made a bunch for Halloween decorating, and I'm already looking forward to making more rosettes for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Valentine's Day!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are a few tips and tricks for making your own paper lollies! Please feel free to Pin and share these rosette tips.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-beR49QEJgA8/UmrpooSHpPI/AAAAAAAAflM/pzKCPfWoK5Y/s1600/5+tips+final.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-beR49QEJgA8/UmrpooSHpPI/AAAAAAAAflM/pzKCPfWoK5Y/s320/5+tips+final.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Tip #1: </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Every rosette needs something in the center. First of all, you need to cover up the middle where you glue the pieces together. Second, it's fun to layer a bunch of stuff to get different looks. This one has a free vintage Halloween printable cat I found on <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/137852438567566109/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a>. I've also used buttons, bling and letters for the centers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VgI9wXVkjNw/UmrTZiEz-8I/AAAAAAAAfj4/xGCoRWebWog/s1600/Vintage+Cat+Rosette.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VgI9wXVkjNw/UmrTZiEz-8I/AAAAAAAAfj4/xGCoRWebWog/s320/Vintage+Cat+Rosette.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Tip #2: </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Use a wide variety of materials in your rosettes. This big one has wrapping paper (the black and white layer), a paper cake doily, a dollar store pumpkin tissue paper shape as well as scrapbook paper and embellishments. It's hanging from a ribbon in my powder room.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also use book paper (ripped from thrift store books) and sheet music - they're some of my favorites. Other ideas: cupcake wrappers, kraft paper, tissue paper and wax paper. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8k7wDoIj9Eg/UmrTfoen_ZI/AAAAAAAAfkM/0AR45yfssA4/s1600/Halloween+rosette.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8k7wDoIj9Eg/UmrTfoen_ZI/AAAAAAAAfkM/0AR45yfssA4/s320/Halloween+rosette.jpg" width="255" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Tip #3</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Glitter and hot glue are your friends. Glitter: I apply Mod Podge to the edges of at least one layer of my paper lollies with a cheap kids' paintbrush before sprinkling on the glitter. It helps to provide a consistent, even distribution. Martha's fine glitter is my favorite. Hot glue: useful for assembling layers and the pieces of the pinwheel. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Tip #4</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Add a stick! Not all lollies need a stick, but that does make them easier to display - sort of like a bouquet of flowers. I use either a dowel or skewer (depending on how heavy the lollies are). For these, I slipped the dowel inside a fun Halloween straw. You could also use a holiday-themed pencil as a good lollie stick - you can always find those at the dollar store!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nsv2DZelxUo/UmrZwal85tI/AAAAAAAAfkY/eZpy_EZ3SbU/s1600/2+lollies+edited.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="306" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nsv2DZelxUo/UmrZwal85tI/AAAAAAAAfkY/eZpy_EZ3SbU/s320/2+lollies+edited.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Tip #5</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There are many ways to make and use paper rosettes. I did purchase the Cricut <a href="http://www.joann.com/cricut-cartridge-ribbons-and-rosettes/11180437.html#q=ribbon+and+rosette&start=2" target="_blank">Ribbons & Rosettes</a> cartridge; however, it's not necessary in order to have fun with paper pinwheels. I do find that the Martha Stewart <a href="http://www.joann.com/martha-stewart-crafts-scoring-board/10397198.html#q=martha+stewart+score&start=1" target="_blank">large scoring board</a> helps - you can find at at Joann for around $20, less with a coupon! Totally worth it. I use a blunt knitting needle to do the scoring, as the supplied tool resulted in my tearing through the paper.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's a great <a href="http://www.jennifermcguireink.com/2011/11/studio-calico-december-kit-video.html" target="_blank">video </a>from Jennifer McGuire that demonstrates an easy way to make paper rosettes. Be warned- I watched that and it started me on this kick. You may not be able to stop either!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Check back soon - I'll show how I used another set of paper rosettes for a Halloween banner.</div>

Lots of dollar store finds in this baby. Those felt spider webs really helped to pull it all together, I think. More on the pumpkins <a href="http://www.quiltedcupcake.net/2013/10/halloween-decorating-ideas-pumpkins-and.html" target="_blank">here</a>. These are a few of my other favorite bits:<br />

My kids may be too old for trick or treating, but I'll never be too old to decorate and create Spooky Spaces!<br />
<br />
My first new Halloween project of the year is a Log Cabin pumpkin wall quilt. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IcE14sczfWo/Uk2OkFnydQI/AAAAAAAAfcs/8DT4KbrGjLU/s1600/QuiltedCupcake+Sewing+project.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IcE14sczfWo/Uk2OkFnydQI/AAAAAAAAfcs/8DT4KbrGjLU/s400/QuiltedCupcake+Sewing+project.JPG" width="340" /></a></div>
I love all the fun Halloween fabrics that <a href="http://www.joann.com/" target="_blank">Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores </a>offer each year - I paired some of my favorites with orange prints to create the base for this pumpkin mini-quilt - it's a simple courthouse steps-style log cabin block at its base. I added half-square triangles to the corners, along with raw-edge applique accents, and the pumpkin came to life! My favorite part may be the candy corn fabric on the binding! <br />
<br />
This one is a wall quilt, but if you used wider strips and kept building the courthouse steps, it could be a great pumpkin throw quilt. Just scale up the accents.<br />
<br />

Any guy who can crochet is cool in my book. I saw on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/QuiltedCupcake" target="_blank">Facebook </a>that he's collecting hats for the <a href="http://drewemborsky.com/charity/" target="_blank">Halos of Hope</a> program. (He even shaved his head at Stitches last year in support!) So, I had to make some. They'll be donated to cancer centers across the country.<br />
<br />

<br />
I've finished 10 so far, hoping to make it to a full dozen. I love when crafters get together to support a cause. <br />
<br />
Want to join in the fun? You have until November 5th to get hats submitted. And, they'll accept knit, crochet or sewn hats, so everyone can help. Check out this link for details: <a href="http://drewemborsky.com/charity/" target="_blank">Halos of Hope</a>.<br />

It's called a cupcake divider, and it's supposed to allow you to make 2-sided cupcakes. I'm skeptical that it will work, but for $1.49, I'll give it a shot.<br />
<br />
Has anyone tried this yet? If so, please leave a comment below to let us know what you think. I'm cupcake curious.<br />

They've been great for double pointed <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/117340775/knitting-needle-holder-knitting-roll-up?ref=shop_home_active" target="_blank">needles </a>and crochet hooks, but not quite long enough for larger 14 inch knitting needles.<br />
<br />
So, when I had the chance to sample some home dec-weight <a href="http://waverly.com/">Waverly </a>fabric from <a href="http://www.joann.com/" target="_blank">Joann</a>, I decided the extra stability would be just what I needed to create a larger version of my original design. <br />
<br />
I love how the mega knitting needle case turned out! It's nice and sturdy, and the modern print is cool, too. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UuOvq0Ix7iA/Ui5P95ySOKI/AAAAAAAAfSA/mN3i8y88bD0/s1600/2013%2B017.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UuOvq0Ix7iA/Ui5P95ySOKI/AAAAAAAAfSA/mN3i8y88bD0/s320/2013%2B017.JPG" /></a>

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MWJqa4BZwxY/Ui5P-wZqdfI/AAAAAAAAfSU/x8crs02dXMw/s1600/2013%2B011.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MWJqa4BZwxY/Ui5P-wZqdfI/AAAAAAAAfSU/x8crs02dXMw/s320/2013%2B011.JPG" /></a>

<br />
<br />
It's also very secure - the top flap holds the needles in place, and the ribbon tie keeps everything neat. I plan to make some more of this design for my <a href="http://www.quiltedcupcake.com/" target="_blank">Etsy </a>shop.<br />

I can honestly say that I've done more ironing of fabric and craft projects than I've EVER ironed clothing. In fact, if I need to iron a piece of clothing in order to wear it, I either A) Don't buy it OR B) Don't wear it unless I have no other choice. But, in quilting, I iron a lot!! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I've been through a variety of irons in my Quilted Cupcake studio, and with limited success. Oh, and I have several burns on my arms from hot irons that stay plugged in while quilting (I'll spare you the scar pictures, lest this post turn into an homage to Jaws!)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">So, when Panasonic asked me to test drive a new cordless iron, I was happy to do it. I tried the <b style="background-color: white; color: #222222; text-align: center;"><a href="http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/NI-L70SR">Panasonic NI-L70SR Cordless Steam/Dry Iron and Charging Base with Curved Stainless Steel Soleplate </a></b><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; text-align: center;"> at home and on the road to see how it would perform in a variety of settings.</span></span><br />
<b style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; text-align: center;"><br /></b>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h2>
<b><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Quick review: I. Love. It.</span></b></h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">For those looking for more details -- </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Love that it's cordless, and it gets HOT. The base stays plugged in, and you can put the hot iron right back on the base. That's the <i>best </i>part - my iron no longer sits up on my table ready to provide another burn.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">The Panasonic iron is lightweight, and powerful. The steam is also quite good - better than on others I've tried. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Before I started using it, I was a little concerned that the cordless part of this iron design would disappoint me. I'd used a cordless iron before (<i>not </i>Panasonic, it was a thrift store model), and was not impressed. The cordless feature is in fact a huge PLUS! You can move all around the room with the iron without a cord tangling.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">I was also worried that I wouldn't like the auto-off feature - I like to be Ready To Go when quilting, and I picked my old iron specifically because it didn't have auto turn off. After many sewing sessions using the new Panasonic iron, I realized that it stays hot for a while after you put it down on the cradle. And, if I've been away from it for a bit, I just push a few buttons and it heats up quickly.</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Finally, the heat-resistant carrying case is Sweeeet. It was so easy to pack the iron for my recent crafty weekend. And, I didn't have to wait for it to cool down before packing it up on the last day. Plus, it's a cute teal color!</span></li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gtllU6k7yK8/Uh0py6WreII/AAAAAAAAfOQ/ZC3qPgbIK_A/s1600/NI-L70SR_Case_Cover_cmyk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="231" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gtllU6k7yK8/Uh0py6WreII/AAAAAAAAfOQ/ZC3qPgbIK_A/s320/NI-L70SR_Case_Cover_cmyk.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can find a local retailer <a href="http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/NI-L70SR">here </a>- the suggested retail price is $69.95, and it's very much worth it! You can also find it at <a href="http://www.walmart.com/ip/Panasonic-Cordless-Iron-With-Carry-Case-Stainless-Steel/8467224">Wal-Mart</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I can't imagine using another iron now. It's that good!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next week, I'll post pics of the new ironing station I created to go along with the iron. </div>

Mandalas or medallions are my current obsession. They're great on pillows. <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 25px;">I start with a basic wool crochet design, and then let creativity take over. I don't follow a pattern, so each one is unique.</span></span><div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As I noted on my <a href="https://www.facebook.com/QuiltedCupcake" target="_blank">Facebook</a> page yesterday, I've become a bit obsessed with <a href="http://www.lowes.com/pd_197749-968-58805/24FF_0__?productId=3121779&Ntt=painters+drop+cloths&pl=1&currentURL=%3FNtt%3Dpainters%2Bdrop%2Bcloths&facetInfo=" target="_blank">Painter's Drop Cloths </a>for sewing projects. I stumbled upon a few projects on <a href="http://pinterest.com/quiltedcupcake/boards/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a>, and couldn't believe I'd been missing this little trend. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's what you start with:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hkFu84Lw7ig/UfrxvxnoiVI/AAAAAAAAakM/VzXBLS9VI5E/s1600/lowes+drop+cloth.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hkFu84Lw7ig/UfrxvxnoiVI/AAAAAAAAakM/VzXBLS9VI5E/s200/lowes+drop+cloth.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here's what you can end up with:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I like the Blue Hawk brand from Lowe's the best - the 4 ft x 5 ft size is only $6 or so. That's a lot of great fabric for not much money. And, they come in even bigger sizes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've already made a bed skirt / dust ruffle- didn't take pics of it yet. It looks a lot like the one by Between You & Me. I just attached strips of the canvas to an existing bed skirt. Here's an in-progress picture to show you the process - Dusty tested it during the assembly :)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My sis and I are planning to do a painted rug, and I'm using some leftovers from the dust ruffle to do a quick table runner.</div>

Annie has a great book called <a href="http://www.anniesloanunfolded.com/products/books" target="_blank">Color Recipes for Painted Furniture</a> with instruction and inspiration for a variety of projects. I love her approach and the whole idea behind this paint technique - no prep, no pre-sanding. Woo hoo! </div>
