Flavor Cupcakery

As part of my ongoing public service campaign to review as many cupcake bakeries as I can (purely altruistic, right? ;), I visited the Flavor Cupcakery in Bel Air, MD yesterday.   This shop was the winner of season 4's Cupcake Wars.  I'd heard about it from a few people, but hadn't found it.  I took a wrong turn leaving Joann yesterday, and I literally drove into the parking lot - that's fate saying I needed a cupcake.

It's a tiny place, but with very nice branding - love their logo.  As for the product, well, it was just OK.  I ordered the salted caramel chocolate cupcake.  The cake part was moist, which is good.  I just didn't love the frosting- I know!  It's frosting, what's not to love?  Well, it just didn't have enough flavor for me.  Also tasted a bit like shortening instead of butter. They use all natural ingredients, and maybe I missed the preservatives?  It was just sort of bland.

I wish I'd tried their Fluffernutter instead.

They did offer push-up cupcakes like these from Maddycakes:

I totally missed that trend!  Now, I can't wait to make some of my own.  You can buy the holders here, but I'm hoping to find a local supplier.

Has anyone made push-up cake pops yet?  Any tips to share?

  1. We have a cupcake wars winner here as well- some of her cupcakes are tasty but others I can't stand. I guess it is the basic flavors I like the best.
