As covered in Quilted Cupcake Podcast Episode 50, Joan Ford's Scrap Therapy: Cut The Scraps is a great resource for using up your fabric scraps. Here's the process that worked for me:
1. Sort huge pile of scraps (above) into 3 piles: strings, crumbs and cut-able. If I could make at least a 3.5 inch square from the scrap, it went into cut-able.
2. Strings and crumbs (for Bonnie K. Hunter-style crumb blocks) get their own individual holders under my cutting table.
3. Iron and cut the larger pieces into 3.5 and 5 inch squares using my AccuQuilt Go Cutter. Look at that awesome pile of squares, ready for a quilt.
It was very liberating to go through that stash of scraps.
Now, I'm sorting my scraps as I create them according to Step One above. I've already used some of the strings and crumbs in projects.

You have inspired me to finally tackle my scrap bin!! However, mine is a 3'x3'x4' HUGE box and will take me several hours :/
ReplyDeleteLisaAnn, starting is the hardest part. Soon, it became a game to see how much went in each pile. It took me the better part of a weekend to sort and cut. Let me know how you do!
ReplyDeleteHi new listener here! I have been listening to old episodes to catch up. I have only been sewing about a year or so and am a new quilter mostly I've been sewing dolls/softies.
ReplyDeleteI have 2 year old twins so I can't sew that often but you are inspiring so I will keep trying to squeeze it in when I can.
Thanks!!
Heather
Wow; nice job with that scrap pile. I finally did the same thing with my paper scraps.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for inspiring me, Sis! I sorted through my scrap bag yesterday and was amazed at some of what I found. Going to cut down the bigger pieces into squares today and give them new life!
