On a recent shopping trip to Hobby Lobby, I found 2 great fabrics.
I already made something with this (stay tuned for pictures). I've been collecting vintage sewing notions for display in my studio, so this fabric called out to me! At first I was concerned that it was a home dec weight, but that worked perfectly for the project I made.
And, this pink print is hopefully going to be a summer skirt. A skirt is on my bucket list of projects I want to do. I was totally inspired by Wendy at A Couple More Hours. See her 10 skirts here.

I've never successfully made clothing for myself from a pattern. There was an awful vest I made in Home Ec in high school, but I don't like to think about that. Let's just say that after the project was graded, it went in the trash. It's probably the reason I haven't attempted clothes since. I did help my sister Jan make my wedding gown, but I was definitely in the "helper" category. She did all the real work.
I'll let you know how it turns out. I have the pattern (one suggested by Wendy), now just need the courage to make the skirt.
Any suggestions for fabrics, tips, etc.? Please post in the comments. I need all the help I can get on this one!
sorry im not much help but i am waiting for you to inspire me because i too have a fear of making clothes for myself!
ReplyDeleteI have been sewing for over 35 years, but my first projects were awful... I hated sewing! But for some reason I was determined to do it and eventually came to love it.
ReplyDeleteBe patient with yourself, make sure you have quality scissors (sharp ones) for cutting your fabric out. Remember, you've learned all these other skills, this is no different! You'll probably find yourself understanding what you're doing much better this time around! Trudy
Back in the 50's I made all my summer skirts. I would buy 3yards of fabrics cut off astrip for a waist band, sew up the side leaving room for a zipper, gather up the long top strip and sew to the waistband, add zipper. The 10 summer skirt looks even easier, sew a band if you choose, make a casing on top and add elastic. If you choose to wear them like I did find one of those old net petticoats. I know you will do agood job.

Jean just jump in and do it! That fabric is beautiful and that pattern is uber simple! You can do it easily and then I want a picture of you wearing it :)
